Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter

On June 1, 2017, Life Care Center of Gray, Tennessee, and Life Care Center of Elizabethton, Tennessee, lost Donna Shell, physical therapist assistant at both centers, to cancer.

Associates wanted to honor Shell’s memory in a special way. Since she loved animals, the teams decided to gather donations for the Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter. Starting just days after her loss, they brought in cat and dog food, litter and toys.

Hannah Miller, teenage daughter of Brandy Treadway, director of nursing at Life Care Center of Gray, took three loads of donated items to the shelter, along with her friends. After taking the donations there, the teenagers began volunteering at the shelter.

“Donna was an unbelievably caring person,” said Regina Diehl, director of rehab at Life Care Center of Gray. “I actually worked with her at three separate jobs, and she always treated everyone with respect and care. Donna would prepare baked goods for everyone, especially on their birthdays. She was very thoughtful.”

Shell had been an associate for six years and a PTA for 33 years. Between 2008 and 2016, she and her husband housed 52 players for the Elizabethton Twins, a Minor League Baseball team affiliated with the Minnesota Twins.
